So today I cleaned out the Eglu, as I do weekly. This involves a number of things.
Firstly, we take off the grey back using two very simple sliding bolts;
Next, after moving the roof off, using similar bolts, to get a better view, I simply lift the nest box inside door out;
Now, it’s easy to slide and lift the roosting bars out;
One night’s worth;
I shut the door when I clean. So now the Cube looks like so;
So now I clean the shades and hang them to dry;
They get dirty because my Cube is under some trees which birds roost in;
Here’s the back of the Cube’s door;
Roosting bars uncleaned;
Next box outside;
All I do to clean everything is rinse with a hose and scrub with a j-cloth. Rinse j-cloth every so often.
For the nest box, I line with newspaper and then add with the bedding. To remove, the bedding clumps together when wet so I tend to wet it to make it much easier to remove. Then put in a bin liner bag before the big rubbish bin.
For the poo trays under the roosting bars, I put the end of the tray in the bag then fold up the newspaper insure the bag. Like so;
Then rinse and scrub.
To show you how easy it is to open the nest box;
When I’m done, I put the washed chicken cloth inconspicuously under one of the shades;
I timed myself. One hour 18 minutes. There was too much bedding so that probably added a couple of minutes on : )
Apart from that cleaning once a week, I dispose of any poo in the nest box every day, de-worm the chickens every month and use mite-kill on them every six weeks.
Hope you enjoyed that. Other media;
There was a dead worm on my patio, so I gave it to the chickens;
